Abstract

1418492 Propelling vehicles NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 20 Feb 1974 [11 Dec 1972] 34746/72 Heading B7H [Also in Division E1] A self-advanceable device for moving stepwise along or through the ground (or like material) comprises two parts which are electrically insulated from each other and which each have an electrically conductive outer surface for contact with the ground, the two parts being interconnected by a thrust motor and their surfaces being connectable to a power source by a switching mechanism arranged to connect the surfaces to a power source in an alternating sequence such that each part is alternately anodic relative to the other part and experiences a greater resistance to movement whereby actuation of the motor is effective to shift the other part relative to the one part. The device may be a mole 10 used for underground cable laying, the two parts 16, 18 of the mole being connected by an insulating bellows 20 and an electrical or hydraulic jack 22, each part including a sump 128, 130 in which water which might otherwise short circuit the parts can collect, the water level in the sump being prevented from reaching the top of walls 124, 126 by pumping it away continuously or periodically. The nose part 16 may be divided into insulated angularly-spaced sections each of which, when the nose part is cathodic relative to part 18, can be selectively disconnected from the negative side of the power, the switched out section(s) experiencing a greater resistance to movement than the other section(s) and thereby tending to divert the nose part in a required direction as the jack advances it. The device may alternatively be used in a pipe jacking system in which a train of pipe sections is urged through the ground from a pit, the device constituting the two leading sections of the train and fresh sections being added to the train from within the pit as the train advances. In other forms the device may constitute an intestinal " bug " or a remote-controlled unit for operating in a nuclear environment.
