Abstract

1418128 Inductive control of vehicles D V OTTO 19 Dec 1974 26917/73 Heading H4U [Also in Division H2] An electrically driven vehicle receives its power by induction via at least one electrical circuit on the vehicle from energized cables laid in the road along which the vehicle travels, the circuit comprising one or more capacitive and one or more inductive elements in series and being integrally formed as a sandwich arrangement of two or more electrically conducting members and one or more electrically insulating members. The circuit is resonant at the supply frequency in the range 400 to 10,000 Hz and is connected to a rectifier and control unit supplying one or more D.C. traction motors. An auxiliary battery supply is provided to allow short range movement of the vehicle and is charged when the vehicle is running on the induced voltage supply or from the normal domestic supply when the vehicle is not in use. A 3-phase 3-conductor supply may be used requiring three pick-up coils. Several coils may be located across the width of the vehicle to allow for lateral movement and provision may be made for automatic steering using the magnetic field of the supply. In a modification a grid network of cables is laid over an area and vehicles each have three coils mounted in orthogonal planes which provide the required movements within the area.
