Abstract

1417971 Liquefying gases BOC INTERNATIONAL Ltd 27 Nov 1972 [1 Dec 1971] 55810/71 Heading F4P [Also in Division G1] A detector for indicating the presence of impurities in a gas stream comprises a conduit 18, 20 in communication with the stream for receiving a small proportion of the latter, a cold source 8 in thermal contact with a part of the conduit so as to be able to maintain that part at a temperature at which the impurities, but not the gas stream, freeze, and an indicator 42 for indicating the flow-rate through the conduit, a portion of the conduit being shaped to trap any frozen impurities and thereby to restrict the rate of fluid flow through the conduit. The indicator 42 which provides a reading indicative of the impurity level in the gas stream may comprise a flow meter or pressure gauge 2 and be connected to an alarm 44. As shown, the detector may be arranged down-stream of a compressor 2 through which gas, e.g. helium is directed via a conduit 3 passing through progressively cooling heat exchangers 4, 6, 8 to a Joule- Thomson valve 10, liquefied gas being collected from the valve 10 in a container 12 while remaining gas is returned to the compressor 2. The conduits 18, 20 pass through a heat exchanger 22. Part of the gas from the exchanger 4 is returned via an expansion engine 14, to the compressor through exchangers 4, 6 to provide additional refrigeration. That part of the detector in which the frozen impurities, e.g. oxygen and nitrogen are accumulated is defined by a narrow bore pipe 40 in heat exchange relation with a copper end piece (26) (Fig. 2, not shown) which extends into the heat exchanger 8, the pipe being connected at its ends to coiled conduit portions which are housed with it in a stainless steel sleeve (28) and connected to the rest of the conduit 18, 20.
