Abstract

1417960 Removing non-polar liquids from aqueous media INNOVA CORP 8 Nov 1972 32185/71 Heading C1C [Also in Divisions C3 and E1] A non-polar water-immiscible liquid is removed from an aqueous medium, e.g. water, soup, gravy) by absorbing it in a hydrophobic oleophilic body which has a density of 2-10 lb./ft.<SP>3</SP> and comprises a mass of mutually intermeshed cellulosic fibres having disturbted therethrough a minor amount (e.g. 3-70% by wt.) of a hydrophobic oleophilic material. The body which may be a sheet, block, stick, cylinder or sphere, is one which is capable of absorbing at least 4 times its weight of oil when afloat on water. The hydrophobic oleophilic material may be a wax (e.g. paraffin, carnauba, montan, petroleum or chlorinated wax), bitumen, asphalt, coal tar pitch, rosin, modified rosin, natural gum, or a polymer or copolymer of butadiene, isoprene, neoprene, ethylene, propylene, styrene, acrylate or methacrylate. The cellulosic fibres may be obtained from wood, sugar cane, cotton or waste paper products. The non-polar liquid may be oil, grease, benzene, carbon tetrachloride, chloroform, cyclohexane, toluene, chlorobenzene, n-octane, octyl alcohol or phenol.
