Abstract

Absorbents for absorbing non-polar liq. from solid surfaces and polar liqs. comprise a dimensionally stable prod. with a bulk density of 30-160 kg/m3, consisting of a large no. of wood-cellulose fibres, the ends of which are frayed into separate fibres and the content of which in the prod. is 3-10 wt.% (calculated on the fibre dry wt.), with a finely dispersed hydrophobic, oleophilic substance (esp. paraffin wax) distributed over the whole mass and adhering to the fibres. The fibre mass pref. consists mainly of wood fibres produced by mechanical shredding, esp. of old wall and ceiling fibreboard and opt. also, to a lesser extent, newspaper. The prod. can be used to absorb oily substances from the surface of solid and liq. foods, to remove oil slicks from water, as absorbent mats, e.g. in petrol stations, and as filters for removing oil, bacterial sludge and other suspended matter from water.
