Abstract

1417883 Subaqueous boring REGAN OFFSHORE INTERNATIONAL INC 22 March 1973 13968/73 Heading E1F A coupling device 10 for coupling a riser string 30 to a floating vessel over a subsea well, comprises a riser string support 60 having a central bore to allow passage of the string therethrough, and means 78 for supporting a tubing hanger 75 secured to the string, the coupling device being secured to the vessel below a rotary table structure 20 and aligned with the table bore 22A thereof, whereby the riser string having a tubing hanger 75 secured thereto is run through the table bore 22A and the central bore of the riser string support 60 until the tubing hanger lands on the means 78 for supporting the tubing hanger. The riser hanger 75 includes a ball-and-socket joint 33, and the support 60 is provided with a radial outlet 71 for connection with a mud return line 51 on the vessel. After installation of the riser string the support 60 is then provided with a diverter 81, which directs incoming mud from a mud return passage 50 in the riser to outlet 71, a blow-out preventer 93 and a packer 96. In an alternative embodiment, the coupling device 40 is positioned at a telescopic joint 31 in the riser and supports the lower length 37 of the riser by means of a hanger 38 cables 42 and constant-tension reel winches 43.
