Wrenches.-An adjustable box spanner is mounted in the tubular handle of a sliding-jaw screw-operated wrench. A metal tube G, of hexagonal shape internally and externally, has, fitting within its corners, the flattened coned ends of six angular sheet-metal members C, bent on entering as shown at H, so that they form at C<1> a hexagon corresponding to the exterior of the tube G. Six pieces J, Fig. 3, are riveted by heads K to the tube G, and have extensions engaging semi-circular lateral grooves I in adjacent edges of the members C, whereby they are held to the tube G but are capable of pivotal movement about the extensions. The protruding ends of the members C are folded back to the depth of the largest nut size to form reinforced gripping parts E, and are flattened to the shape shown at P, rivets X fixing them to six levers D supported by a band V mounted in central grooves. Engaging the ends D' of the levers D is a cone S, mounted on the end of a spindle T screwed at R to engage a nut M fixed by screws' N to the tube G. A cylindrical extension 0 of the nut M, has a groove engaging pins Q, in a fixed jaw A, in which is guided an extension of the screw R terminating in an adjustable jaw B. An hexagonal tube F slides over the parts C<1> and G. In the position shown in Fig. 1, rotation of the tube F causes rotation of the tube G and the nut M, the adjustable jaw B approaches or recedes from the fixed jaw A, according to the direction of rotation, and the gripping parts E are forced together by the cone S, or returned by the spring nature of the members C. When the wrench is adjusted for use, the tube F is pushed towards the jaw A, preventing relative rotation of the parts O and A, and making the wrench rigid. The tube F may be moved in the opposite direction to increase the leverage of the sliding-jaw wrench.
