Abstract

1417310 Valve lubrication FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 23 Nov 1973 [11 Dec 1972] 54482/73 Heading F1B A valve stem seal and lubricator 47 for an I.C. engine having a valve stem 29 reciprocable relative to a valve guide 35 comprises a capillary member 59 with orifice 61 and a generally cup-shaped seal member 49 surrounding the capillary member and having a base portion 53 with an orifice 51 to slidably and sealingly engage the valve stem and an axially extending portion 55 for engaging the valve guide 35, there being passage means (openings 65) in the seal member spaced from orifice 51 and exposing a portion of the capillary member. The seal member 49 has an inwardly opening groove 57 in which the capillary member is received. Oil travelling over the valve stem surface is stripped by the edge of orifice 51 and flows towards openings 65 through which some passes to the member 59 to be drawn radially inwards towards the valve stem. The capillary member 59 may be of felt or sintered metal and the seal member 49 may be of synthetic rubber or nylon.
