Abstract
1417282 Filtering water; humidifier RHONEPOULENC SA 3 July 1973 [4 July 1972] 31661/73 Headings B1D and B1R [Also in Division F4] In a process for carrying out heat exchange between a gas and a liquid in an apparatus comprising a plurality of hollow fibres made of a Liquid-permeable, polymeric material, said liquid being in contact with one wallsurface of the hollow fibre whilst the gas is in contact with the other wall-surface, a pressure differential maintained between the gas and the liquid is such that liquid permeates. through the fibre wall and the permeated liquid is at least partly evaporated in the gas. The whole or only some of the liquid may pass through the wall. Specific uses mentioned for the apparatus are heat exchangers such as evaporation-type refrigerators and gas coolers, heat exchangers in the humidifying of air and, in cases where the material is such that germs, bacteria, and viruses cannot pass through the wall, . for providing air for a sterile atmosphere. Ultrafiltering or osmotic hollow fibres of any known type may be used. The Specification sets out examples suggesting suitable polymers, pressures, and dimensions. In the heat exchanger shown, the end portions of the hollow fibres 3 are embedded in cured synthetic resin firstly at joints 6, 7 to a jacket 8 of the heat exchanger; and secondly to terminal sleeves 1, 2.
