Abstract

1417274 Diethylamine and triethylamine RUHRCHEMIE AG 12 March 1973 [17 March 1972] 11834/73 Heading C2C Diethylamine or triethylamine are made by (a) reacting acetaldehyde and ammonia to produce α-ethanolamine and (b) reacting the α- ethanolamine with acetaldehyde-in the presence of hydrogen and a hydrogenation-dehydrogenation catalyst. Diethylamine is produced when the molar ratio of α-ethanolamine : acetaldehyde is about 1 and triethylamine is produced when this molar ratio is from 1 : 2 to 1:3. The reaction may be performed in the presence of a solvent (e.g. a hydrocarbon or alcohol). The catalyst is preferably a mixture of metallic Fe, Co, Ni, Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir or Pt, a compoind of Cr, Mo, W or U and, possibly, an activator, e.g. MgO or Al 2 O 3 .
