Abstract

1416606 Oxygen electrode FORD MOTOR CO Ltd 7 Nov 1973 [6 Dec 1972] 51674/73 Heading GIN The oxygen content of a molten metal is determined using a solid electrolyte and an oxygen reference comprising a carbide of chromium, niobium, tantalum or titanium. The carbide has a higher melting point than the major constituent of the metal. The electroyte may be thoria, calcia stabilized zirconia or beryllia stabilized calcia stabilized zirconia and the metal is preferably steel. Connection to a high impedance voltmeter may be made by a molybdenum wire in the carbide (which contacts the electrolyte) and a similar wire in the molten metal.
