Abstract
1416523 Water heaters ELECTRICITY COUNCIL 26 Nov1973 [11 Oct 1972] 46845/72 Heading F4A In a water-heater comprising a unitary structure a casing 15 contains an electrically powered water pump 5 and electrically-powered flow heater 1, a time switch 8 for controlling the periods when the heater and pump are to be operated and at least one water thermostat 3, 4 is arranged to switch off the power to the heater when the water temperature reaches a predetermined value. The pump 5 and heater 1 are electrically interconnected so that the flow heater 1 is energized only when the pump 5 is operative. Three elements may be provided in the heater and switches 13 enable one, two or three of these elements to be selected. Preferably, the pump 5 is connected such that it operates continuously during the periods when the time switch 8 supplies electrical power. In the wiring diagram shown in Fig. 2, mains electricity supply switch 20 supplies mains voltage to a mains terminal within the casing 15. When the time switch 8 closes a switch 24 mains voltage is supplied to a safety thermostat 4 which, if the water temperature in the flow heater 1 is too hot, short circuits to permit a relay 6 to be energized. A room thermostat 26 is energized at the same time such that if the air temperature falls below the required setting mains voltage is supplied to the water thermostat 3 and selection switches 13 of Low, Medium or High permit energization of one, two or all three of the elements 2 if the water temperature falls below the setting of the thermostat 3. Any undesirable temperature rise could operate the safety thermostat 4 which is of the manual re-set type.
