1416501 Derivatives of 2,3-dihydrobenzofuran F HOFFMANN-LA ROCHE & CO AG 19 April 1973 [21 April 1972] 18996/73 Heading C2C The invention comprises compounds of general Formula I wherein R, R 1 , R 2 , R 5 , R 6 , R 7 , R 8 and R 9 each represent a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group, R 3 and R 4 each represent a lower alkyl group, A represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl, lower alkoxy, lower alkenyloxy or lower alkynyloxy group and B represents a hydrogen atom or B represents a lower alkoxy, lower alkenyloxy or lower alkynyloxy group when A represents a hydrogen atom or a lower alkyl group or A and B together represent an additional bond or an oxygen bridge, C and D each represent a hydrogen atom or together represent an additional bond, E and F each represent a hydrogen atom or together represent an additional bond or when C and D each represent a hydrogen atom E and F can also represent an oxygen bridge, p stands for 1 or 2, n and m each stand for zero or 1 and one of the symbols X and Y represents an oxygen atom and the other symbol represents a methylene group which may be mono- or disubstituted with a lower alkyl group. " Lower " means containing up to 6 carbon atoms. These compounds may be prepared by (a) reacting a compound of general Formula II where Z represents a chlorine, bromine or iodine atom or a methylsulphonyloxy or p-toluene sulphonyloxy group, with a compound of the general Formula III where M stands for an alkali metal or alkaline earth metal, (b) hydrogenating a phenyl derivative of Formula I in which at least one of the pairs of symbols A and B, C and D or E and F together represent an additional bond, (c) epoxidizing a phenyl derivative of Formula I in which at least one of the pairs of symbols A and B and E and F together represent an additional bond, or (d) reacting a phenyl derivative of Formula I in which A and B together represent an additional bond, with water or a lower alkanol in the presence of acid or a mercury salt (or organomercury compound obtained being subsequently reduced) and, in the case wherein the reactant is water, reacting a resulting hydroxy compound with a compound of the general formula R 10 -Z wherein R 10 represents a lower alkyl, lower alkenyl or lower alkynyl group. Preparations of starting materials for the above processes and of their precursors are described and exemplified. The compounds of the invention are pesticides.
