Abstract

1416473 Regulating I C engines; stopping engines I F VAN DER MERWE 9 March 1973 [16 March 1972] 11521/73 Headings F1B and F1K A safety device 10 for a liquid lubricated engine comprises a first member 28, 30 movable from a first position against the bias of a spring 58 by lubricant pressure acting through an inlet 70 and a second member 48, 52 which is movable from a first position against the bias of a spring 66 when a predetermined operation, e.g. engine starting or operation of the engine clutch or brake, takes place. A member 64 moved with the first member 28, 30 acts on balls 82, received in a recess 84 on the second member 48, 52 to lock the second member in a second position when the first member is in a second position. The spring 66 provides a greater biasing force than the spring 58 and when the balls 82 are released by the member 64 due to a fall in lubricant pressure both springs act to return the first member to its first position. The part 30 of the first member may act as a valve between a fuel outlet 24 and an inlet 26, apertures 42 and 46 providing a limited fuel flowpath when the second member is displaced from its first position. A relay (R), Fig. 6 (not shown), may be actuated to interrupt the power supply to spark-plugs (S) and operate a warning hooter by a contact bridging member (98), Fig. 3 (not shown), on the second member or a contact bridging member (102), Fig. 4 (not shown) on the first member. A time delay may be included in the relay circuit so that the relay is inoperable for a period after engine starting. The piston 52 of the second member may be subject to air-pressure by a piston 74 which is pressurized by a pneumatic cylinder (C), Fig. 5 (not shown), when a lever (L) is operated for engine starting or by pneumatic or hydraulic pressure from a brake or clutch master cylinder when the brake or clutch is operated. The pressure chamber 54 of the piston 52 may be supplied with air through a check-valve 80 and a bleed past the valve permits air to escape from the chamber over a period of time so that the spring 66 may return the piston to its first position if not locked in its second position.
