Abstract

1416210 Moulding a mould MARDON SON & HALL Ltd 2 July 1974 [17 July 1973] 33943/73 Heading B5A A method of making a mould from which is prepared an impression plate for producing a decoration of low relief, i.e. a maximum depression or elevation not greater than 0À06 inch on a surface comprises (a) providing a surface of a member 10 with a decoration 12 of low relief constituted by a random arrangement of depressions and elevations (b) forming thereon a sheet 15, e.g. of P.V.C. which follows such depressions, the sheet being treated with a release agent, e.g. of silicone, (c) surrounding the sheet with a sidewall 16 to form a tray, (d) introducing moulding composition into the tray and removing the thus formed mould from the tray when the composition has set. An impression plate is produced from the mould by clamping the mould and a sheet of compressible plastics material together in a heated press and applying a backing member to the impressed sheet. The decoration 12 may comprise glass fragments, metallic sequins or clumps of confetti adhered to the member 10. The moulding composition may comprise synthetic resin fed into the tray in three stages to form superimposed layers, the first and third layers incorporating aluminium powder. When the impression plate is pressed against a foil mounted on a cartonboard sheet the foil receives a surface decoration which is a negative reproduction of the decoration on the member 10.
