Abstract

1416085 Wells &c BAKER OIL TOOLS Inc 16 March 1973 [13 April 1972 5 Sept 1972] 28329/73 Divided out of 1416084 Heading E1F A sub-surface safety valve V1 (Figs. 9a, 9b) comprises a body 136, a valve member 176, a lateral opening 207 in the body, a closure 208 for the opening, and means 213, 214, 178 on the closure and in the body for supporting the valve member. The member 176 is biassed to a closed position (shown) by the sleeve 178 which is spring pressed and acted upon by the pressure of well fluids. When in the closed position the member is engaged by a spring-pressed seal 202. The member is moved to the open position by a sleeve 185 having a piston 187, control fluid from the surface passing through a port 201 into a chamber 195 to move the sleeve 185 downwardly to move the member to the open position for production of well fluids. As the member is about to move to the open position an equalizing valve 220 connects ports 225, 226 to equalize pressure over the member. The member may be locked in the open position by moving a sleeve 196 downwardly, and an auxiliary valve may be locked in the open valve and controlled by the fluid pressure as described in Specification 1416084. The valve is part of a valve-assembly V (Fig. 2) which includes a valve V2 of similar construction, the assembly being used in the production apparatus described in Specification 1416084. The assembly supported on tubing T3, T4 is lowered into a section 11 of a tubing hanger supporting lower production tubing (not shown). A key 148 on the assembly engages the section so that tubes 128, 129 communicating with the valve engage hanger sockets 19 connected to the lower production tubing. The assembly is releasably latched to the hanger by a latch 125 comprising an expander 142 and fingers 150 on the assembly, the fingers engaging a flange 16 on the hanger on relative movement of the fingers and the expander. Rotation of the tubing T4 causes a nut 161 to tension a rod 160 to move the expander against the pressure of springs 156 to set the latch. The control fluid is led to the valves by a conduit CF.
