Abstract

1415914 Pellets for freezing or scalding living bodies HOECHST AG 11 Jan 1973 [13 Jan 1972] 1560/73 Heading A5R [Also in Division F4] A method of rapidly lowering or raising the temperature of a small area of a living body comprises contacting said area with a pellet of cellular plastics material having a density in the range of 25 to 40 kg/m<SP>3</SP> and between 10 and 20 pores/cm<SP>2</SP>, impregnated with a freezing or scalding agent. A suitable plastics material is polyester polyurethane although other materials are listed as being suitable. The pellet has the form of a body having a constant cross section which may be a trapezium, a rectangle or a circle. In one example, a pellet having trapezoidal cross section is 8 mm long and has parallel sides 3 mm and 7mm long. The preferred density is 33 kg/cm<SP>2</SP> and the preferred porosity is 17/cm<SP>2</SP>. Preferred freezing agents are haloalkanes, e.g. monofluorotrichloromethane, or carbon dioxide snow. Very hot water may be used as the scalding agent. The pellet is stated to be especially useful in dentistry.
