Abstract

1415782 Indicator means A W CHAPMAN 24 Jan 1974 [10 Feb 1973] 6674/73 Heading A5G [Also in Division G1] An indicator means for showing that a material has been sterilised by steam comprises a carrier on which is deposited a mixture of a carboxylic acid and one of its salts, the acid and salt on exposure to steam producing alkali and consequently a continuous change of pH in the alkaline direction as exposure to steam continues, and a pH indicator dye or dyes which, by changing in colour as the pH changes, shows the extent of exposure to steam. The acid is preferably 2, 4-dihydroxybenzoic acid. The indicator may be a mixture of methyl red, bromocresol green and picric acid. An alternative indicator is a mixture of methyl red and bromothymol. The carrier may be porous paper. The indicator means may be sealed into transparent plastic envelopes which are permeable to steam but retard the penetration of the steam and prevent the material on the carrier from being washed away.
