Abstract

1415685 Dredgers supported on air cushions J T MACKLEY & CO Ltd 15 Oet 1973 [14 Oct 1972] 47514/72 Heading B7K [Also in Division E1] A dredger 1, comprising a cutter/suction head 14 carried by a pivotal hollow arm 16 connected to a suction pump 17 which discharges dredged material ashore through a flexible hose 18, is supported in use by an air cushion 3 enclosed by a flexible shirt 5 and supplied with cushion air by a pair of fans 2 which are driven by engine units 9 and discharge compressed air directly into cushion space 3. The platform carries a further hose 19 for the supply of lubricating water to head 14 and a pair of retractable anchoring spuds 12 and the skirt may be of the looped/segmented form disclosed in Specification 1,141,601. In an alternative embodiment the platform has a cut-out to enable the arm 16 to be lowered and the arm carries a portion of flexible skirt which seals against the side walls of the cut-out. The dredger may be winched into a working position or it may be propelled by propeller or jetreaction means or by apparatus engaging a water-bed surface. It may be manoeuvred by releasing jets of air from the cushion for which water instead of air may be used, the fans 2 being replaced by water pumps.
