Abstract

1415665 Rotary I C engines - gas turbine plant D A KILLIP 4 May 1973 [4 April 1972] 15317/72 Heading F1G A rotary Internal Combustion engine comprises a rotor disc mounted on a shaft 12 and rotatably supported within a casing formed by a cup-shaped part 2 and a cover plate 10. A fan impeller 22 is also mounted on the shaft 12 and rotates within a casing 4 which is secured to the casing part 2, being formed with an inlet for an air/fuel mixture which enters as indicated by arrow A. The rotor disc is formed at its right-hand face with two circular recesses which define combustion chambers 8 and from which extend passages 36 in the form of discharge nozzles and which open out at the other face of the rotor disc. Three equi-spaced openings 28 are formed in the wall 2A of the casing 2 and three equi-spaced spark igniters 30A project through the wall 2A between the openings 28. Fuel/air mixture impelled by the fan 22 passes through an opening 28 into a combustion chamber 8. As the combustion chamber rotates past an igniter 30A the mixture is fired and the gases discharge through an outlet nozzle 36 into the space within the cover plate 10, the gases finally discharging through tangential outlets 46 as indicated by arrows C. The nozzles 36 are disposed tangentially so that the rotor disc is rotated by the discharging gases. The rotor disc is formed at its left-hand face with radial cooling fins 40 and cooling air is drawn through openings 44 in the cover plate 10 and discharges with the exhaust gases through the outlets 46. The combustion chambers carry liners 32 which engage against the inner surface of the casing wall 2A. The rotor disc is formed with raised arcuate lands 34 between the combustion chambers, the lands also engaging against the inner surface of the casing wall 2A.
