Abstract

1415655 Crimping fibres PLATT SACO LOWELL LTD 31 Jan 1973 [31 Jan 1972] 4466/72 Heading D1F A stuffer-box crimping apparatus comprises a passage 14 which extends from an entry end 26 to an exit end 16 and is of such form as gradually to increase in cross-sectional area from the entry end 26 throughout the entry region of the passage, means e.g. feed rolls 4 for advancing filament into the entry end 26 to form a plug of crimped filaments, means delivering crimped filaments from the exit end 16, and a pair of back pressure elements 32, 34 each located in the entry region and so arranged to be biassed by a baissing force e.g. weight 44 and bar 40, to a first position in which it projects into the passage to form a constriction and to be movable against the biassing force by the force of the advancing filament plug to a second position in which it forms no constriction or substantially no constriction of the passage, the mounting and movement of each element 32, 34 and the shape thereof being such that it offers a plug contacting surface which in movement of the element from the first to the second position advances with the plug. Each element has a surface generated by a line parallel to the pivotal axes of the element and moving thereabout to form of portion 46, 48 of constant radius from the pivotal axis and a straight portion 50, 52 tangential to the curved portion 46, 48. The elements 32, 34 are accommodated in opposed slots 28, 30 in the walls of the passage 14 and in the non-constricting state, the portions 50, 52 lie in the planes of the passage walls. The pivotal movement of the elements 32, 34 is limited by adjustable stops 54, 58 and 56, 60. The means delivering crimped filament from the exit end 16 of the passage 14 may be responsive to means determining the position of the head of the plug in the passage and controlled to maintain said position substantially constant. A step 143 may be provided in the walls of the passage whereby the cross-sectional area of the passage downstream of the elements 32, 34 is greater than that of the passage upstream of the elements 32, 34.
