1415557 Hydrolysis of acrylonitrile/sulphonic acid copolymers CASSELLA FARBWERKE MAINKUR AG 9 Oct 1973 [9 Oct 1972] 47084/73 Heading C3P [Also in Division D1] Acrylonitrile/unsaturated sulphonic acid copolymers, having a K value of 30-140 and containing 0À1-30 wt. per cent of sulphonic acid radicals, are hydrolysed in an aqueous alkali metal hydroxide solution containing 8- 35 wt. per cent alkali metal hydroxide, at 70- 150‹ C., to saponify the nitrile groups to -COOM groups, where M is the cation of the alkali metal hydroxide, and the product is adjusted to a pH of 6-9, e.g. with sulphuric or acetic acid. The starting material may be fibre scraps. In examples, copolymers of acrylonitrile with allyl-, methallyl-, vinyl-, or vinylbenzenesulphonic acids are hydrolysed. Uses.-Textile treating, especially sizing and impregnating.
