The invention comprises diketo-dicarboxylic acids of formula wherein the groups R are the same and each is hydrogen, or a methyl group; salts and esters thereof, in particular 7,12-dioxo-octadecane 1,18-dioic acid and 2,17-dimethyl-7,12-dioxooctadecane-1,18-dioic acid, and a process of preparation in which a tetraketone of formula is hydrolysed. The tetraketone may be heated with aqueous alkali, preferably an aqueou alkali metal hydroxide.
