Abstract

1415454 Mounting electrical components, e.g. semi-conductors, capacitors and resistors WELWYN ELECTRIC Ltd 4 May 1973 21316/73 Headings H1R H1K H1M and HIS An electric component or electrically insulating substrate therefor comprises a plastics or ceramic body 7 having two or more conductive integral projections 8, 9, Fig. 2, which provide terminals for the component, the conductive projections 8, 9 being shaped to engage in respective holes 10, 11 in a circuit board 12 and each terminal having associated therewith one or more shoulders 16 which make contact with the board over a sufficient area to provide the component or substrate with the required stability under the action of applied forces transverse to the circuit board. The metallized terminals 8, 9 may be soldered to conductive tracks 13, 14 on the board 12 and a cut-away or recessed portion 20 may be provided in the body 7 to allow access by a cleaning fluid. The conductive projections 8, 9 may be of truncated pyramidal or conical shape. The component may be a resistor formed by a resistive film 15 of metal, carbon, metal oxide or cermet, or it may be a capacitor, Fig. 5, in which two metallic films 24, 26 are separated by a dielectric layer 25 of plastics, mica, paper or ceramic. Alternatively the body 7 may support a semi-conductor device. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8 the body 43 has a number of conductive terminal projections 44 with conductive tracks 49 contacting a number of different components 45. A protective layer of insulating material may be provided over the component except for the projecting terminal portions thereof.
