1415154 Measuring rheological properties NATIONAL RESEARCH DEVELOPMENT CORP 7 Nov 1972 [20 Aug 1971] 39206/71 Heading G1S [Also in Division F2] Apparatus for measuring rheological properties comprises a shaft 4 driven at a variable speed by motor 1, a container 10 for a liquid, a first coupling mechanism between shaft 4 and container 10 for continuously rotating container 10, and a second coupling mechanism between shaft 4 and container 10 for imparting an oscillatory motion to container 10. Shaft 4 is driven via a cone 2 and wheel 3, the drive ratio being adjusted by moving the motor 1 and cone 2 along a slide 8 by means of a screw mechanism 9. To rotate the container 10 continuously the first drive mechanism comprises a pair of gears 5 and 6. To oscillate container 10, the second drive mechanism comprises a helical gear 19 on shaft 14 driving a gear 18, and an eccentric pin 17 on gear 18 slidable in a slot 20 in one end of a rod 21, the other end of rod 21 being coupled to shaft 7. A cylinder 11 mounted on a shaft 12 is constrained against rotation by a spring 13'. When the container is rotated continuously, the angular deflection of cylinder 10 against spring 13' is measured by a pointer 14 and scale 15. During oscillatory motion, the movements of shaft 7 are monitored by detectors 22, and the movements of cylinder 11 by detectors 22', the detectors being magnetic or capacitance detectors coupled to an indicating device such as a cathode ray tube. The container 10 and cylinder 11 are removable and may be replaced with units of different sizes, and spring 13' may be replaced with springs of different rates.
