1414328 Chromium co-ordination complexes E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 22 Dec 1972 [22 Dec 1971] 59424/72 Addition to 1342910 Heading C2C [Also in Division B5] Water-soluble co-ordination complexes of chromium (III) derived from a water-soluble salt thereof with a non-co-ordinated and monovalent anion, which salt yields Cr (H 2 O)<SP>3+</SP> 6 ions on dissolution in water with a trans-acid of formula wherein R 1 and R 2 , same or different are H, alkyl, -CH 2 COOH or phenyl, the total number of carbon atoms in said trans acid being in the range 4-10 inclusive and the approximate ratio of chromium (III) to acid (each in the cation complex) to non-co-ordinated anion being 2 : 1 : 4, are prepared by heating the trans-acid in solution with a water-soluble chromium (III) salt with the approximate ratio of chromium to acid in the solution being 2 : 1. Acids may be fumaric, methyl and phenyl fumaric and aconitic acids with nitrate as the preferred anion. A preferred compound has the formula [Cr 2 (H 2 O) 10 (C 4 HZO 4 )]X 4 where X is the non-co-ordinated anion, e.g. nitrate and Z is H or CH 3 and X is monovalent. Aqueous solutions are blue and have a light absorption spectra with two maxima at about 4100‹ A and 5700‹ A. The complexes may be used to treat a substrate, e.g. metal, metal oxide or glass to improve adhesive bonding of organic polymers. Examples describe the preparation of complexes from chromium nitrate nonahydrate, sodium hydroxide and fumaric acid in aqueous solutions, or with deuterated reagents or in alcoholic or tetrahydrofuran solutions.
