Abstract

1342910 Chromium co-ordination complexes E I DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO 19 April 1971 [2 April 1970 1 March 1971] 26044/71 Headings C2C [Also in Divisions B2 and B5] Water-soluble co-ordination complexes of chromium (III) with a trans-acid of formula wherein R 1 and R 2 represent hydrogen or an alkyl, -CH 2 .COOH or phenyl group with total carbon atoms of 4 to 10, are prepared by reacting an aqueous solution of the acid at 70‹ to 100‹ C. with a chromium salt yielding the hexaaquochromic ion in aqueous solution at pH 0.2 to 2.4. The chromium (III) is derived from a water soluble chromium (III) salt with a non-co-ordinated anion, the salt being one which yields Cr(H 2 O) 6 <SP>3+</SP>. Preferred acids are fumaric yielding compounds of approximate formula [Cr(H 2 O) 5 - (C 4 H 3 O 4 )]X 2 and [Cr(H 2 O) 4 (C 4 H 2 O 4 )]X where X is the non-co-ordinated anion such as nitrate. the preparation may take place in stages with neutralization and removal of nitric acid between each stage. The composition may be used in aqueous solution to treat a substrate, e.g. metal, metal oxide or glass to improve polymer bonding characteristics. Examples describe the preparation of compositions from chromium (III) nitrate and fumaric and mesaconic acids.
