Abstract

1413871 Magnesia SHIN NIHOM KAGAKU KK 5 Jan 1973 682/73 Heading C1A Magnesia refractory grains with a CaO/SiO 2 molar ratio of not less than 2 and having a bulk density of not less than 3À2 g. are made by (1) adding quick lime, calcined dolomite, slaked lime or slaked dolomite to an aqueous solution containing magnesium ions to precipitate magnesium hydroxide, the quantity of quick lime, calcined dolomite, slaked lime or slaked dolomite being such as to maintain the reaction mixture at a pH not lower than 11À2 and thereafter (2) dead-burning the precipitated magnesium hydroxide. The reaction (1) may be carried out in a plurality of reaction vessels connected in series in at least the first of which the pH is not higher than 11À2 and in at least the last of which the pH is not higher than 11À2. The solution remaining after the removal of magnesium hydroxide from the reaction mixture may be used as a starting material for a process according to the invention.
