Abstract

1413779 Self-hardening mixture TSENTRALNY NAUCHNO - ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT TEKHNOLOGII MASHINOSTROENIA 24 May 1974 23432/74 Heading C3N A self-hardening moulding mixture for making foundry moulds and cores comprises: (a) moulding sand, (b) orthophosphoric acid, (c) ferrous oxide or a material containing ferrous oxide, and (d) one or more compounds, preferably in an amount 0.5-5% by weight of the moulding sand selected from (i) a water-soluble alkali-metal or ammonium salt of a carboxylic acid having a dissociation constant of not more than 10<SP>-4</SP>, (ii) a water-soluble alkali-metal or ammonium salt of an isopolyacid of a metal of chromium, molybdenum or tungsten, (iii) a manganese dioxide, or (iv) urea. Component (d)(i) may be an alkali metal or ammonium salt of citric acid, oxalic acid, acetic acid, tartaric acid, valeric acid, glycollic acid, butyric acid, formic acid or propionic acid. Component (d)(ii) is preferably an alkali metal or ammonium chromate, bichromate, tungstate, bitungstate, molybdate or bimolybdate. Component (d)(iii) may be manganese dioxide or a manganese dioxide-containing material, e.g. pyrolusite or ramsdellite, or manganic oxide or a manganic oxide-containing material, e.g. braunite. The sand may be quartz, olivine, zircon, chromemagnesite or chromite. The ferrous oxide containing material preferably comprises not less than 30% by weight ferrous oxide and may be ison scale having an FeO content of 48% by weight and a specific surface area of 1500 cm.<SP>2</SP>/g. The mixture may also contain a foaming agent suitably in an amount 0À1-1% by weight of the moulding sand. The foaming agent is preferably an alkyl aryl sulphonate, an alkyl sulphate or an alkyl sulphonate. As ingredient (b) use is preferably made of orthophosphoric acid having a concentration of 40-50% by weight in an amount 4-12% by weight. The mixture preferably comprises 2-6% by weight of ferrous oxide based on the moulding sand.
