Abstract

1413305 Fuel elements BABCOCK & WILCOX CO 30 Nov 1972 [13 Dec 1971] 55411/72 Heading G6C A nuclear fuel element spacer grid structure comprises a cellular arrangement circumscribed by a peripheral band, the width of the band being less than the width of the components of the cellular arrangement and sloping surfaces being provided to afford transition zones when the members of different widths abut As shown in Fig. 1, the grid structure comprises a cellular arrangement of mutually perpendicular, interlocked plates such as 11-15 circumscribed by a peripheral band 25 whose width, taken vertically in the figure, is less than the width of the plates 11-15. Corners of the plates 11-15 are chamfered to provide sloping surfaces 20-23 where the ends of the plates abut the band. Additionally, corners of the band 25 are cut away to provided Vee-shapes 30, 31. The sloping surfaces and corner shape assist proper location of adjacent fuel elements such as elements 33, 34 (Fig. 3) during charging/ discharging and prevent their becoming locked together. Also, due to the reduction of material in the structure, parasitic neutron losses are reduced. As shown, inwardly protruding detents 19, 24 are formed in the plates 11-15 and band 25 to contact the fuel rods. The detents may be provided on inwardly bent parts of the plates and band. Specification 1,413,306 is referred to.
