Abstract
1413118 Bearings J K GODSILL (Litton Industries Inc) 14 Dec 1972 57788/72 Heading F2A A bearing assembly includes a magnetizable fluid as a lubricant and has means for producing a constraining magnetic field which acts to prevent leakage of the fluid from the assembly. As shown, a rotatable shaft 16 extends through axially aligned apertures 18, 20 in respective end portions 22, 24 of a permanent magnet 26 which is formed with a ring-shaped zone 30 filled with a magnetizable lubricant 32. The field produced by the magnets 26 acts on the lubricant 32 to develop leak proof magnetic seals at the gaps 34, 36. An electromagnet (42, 44) Fig. 2, not shown, may replace the permanent magnet 26. The bearing assembly may be in the form of a rolling bearing having a magnetized cage or a magnetized race, Figs. 9 and 10, not shown; or in the form of a combined thrust-and-journal bearing provided with one or a pair of thrust pads which co-operate with magnet pole shoes to define clearances filled with the lubricant, Figs. 3 and 8, not shown. The pole shoes may be constituted by bimetallic rings which flex with changes in temperature to allow for thermal expansion and contraction of the lubricant, which comprises an appropriate liquid carrier, e.g. water, silicone soils, mineral oils, dibutyl phthalate, combined with colloidal - size particles of magnetic materials, e.g. ferrite materials including garnets, spinels or magnetite.
