Abstract

1413061 Continuous hot dip galvanizing MANEELY-ILLINOIS Inc 30 March 1973 [28 April 1972] 15493/73 Heading C7F A continuous process of forming and galvanizing strip material e.g. steel, comprises feeding the strip 10 to a cleaning and degreasing plant 23, a tube forming and welding station 32, a pickle station 35 comprising three spray manifolds 40 where acid is applied countercurrent to the strip tube movement, an air wiper 41, a water rinse manifold 70 where the water is applied countercurrent to the tube movement, an air wiper 71, a furnace 75, 76 which heats the strip to 300-1300‹F in an inert atmosphere, a galvanizing pot 80, an air wiper and water quench and a shear 110. Pickling is effected at manifolds 40 by spraying hot aqueous 5-33% HCl through inclined holes in the inner tube of an assembly of two concentric tubes. The rinsing manifold 70 has a similar construction. The pickled and rinsed tube enters a sealed inert gas manifold 73 which feeds inert gas e.g. N2 into the two furnaces 75, 76 inductively heated by coils 77, 78. The molten Zn, which may contain Al is pumped and circulated to pot 80 from reservoir 90. Water quenching is effected by flowing water through a trough countercurrent to the movement of the tube sufficient to maintain the water at 85-140‹F at the entry of the strip. The Zn coating weight is controlled by an adjustable air wiper Fig.9 (not shown), which directs the air tangentially of the formed tubing and countercurrent to the tube movement. Instead of tubes, the strip may be formed into S bars and angles at station 32.
