Abstract

1412972 Thermal insulation IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 21 June 1973 [3 July 1972] 31044/72 Heading F2X A storage vessel is thermally insulated by covering it with insulating laminates each comprising an inner layer of a rigid synthetic plastics foam and an outer metal cladding sheet. First, a plurality of stud-and plate assemblies are prefabricated, each comprising a metal stud in an upstanding position upon a metal backing plate, and then each assembly is secured to a preselected spot on a vertical wall of the vessel by an adhesive, preferably an epoxy resin mix, so that the studs protrude horizontally from the vessel wall. Holes are provided in eah insulating laminate at preselected spots, each of which is selected so that it will be in registration with one of the studs. Each laminate is then mounted upon the vessel with its free foam face adjacent the vessel wall and with each stud protruding through one of the holes to the exterior of the cladding sheet, the free ends of the studs being secured by nuts. The free foam faces of the laminates may be secured to the vessel wall by an adhesive, preferably a rubber-based impacttype adhesive. In each laminate, the outer cladding sheet extends beyond one edge and one end of the foam layer to provide an edge-lap and an end-lap which enable a wall of laminates to be built up by lapping and jointing laminates edge-toedge and end-to-end. The outer cladding sheet is profiled in the form of alternating crests and troughs, the troughs being in immediate contact with the foam whereas the crests form open-ended channels upstanding from the foam. The holes in the cladding sheet are provided in the troughs. Adjacent laminates are secured together by ivets or screws in the crests, or angles of the crests, of the edge-laps and/or end-laps.
