Abstract

1412799 Playback of flexible disc records MATSUSHITA ELECTRIC INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 18 Dec 1972 [20 Dec 1971 28 Dec 1971 29 Dec 1971 (2)] 58350/72 Heading G5R In an arrangement for playing back a spirally grooved video disc record 1 formed of flexible plastics material which is rotated by turntable 2 and is supported by an air bearing formed bebetween it and base member 17, the contact between pick up stylus and groove is improved by reducing the sag at the outer periphery of the record and by resiliently suspending the pick up from a shoe which is supported on an air bearing between its base and the record. The sag reduction can be achieved by controlling by means of a diaphragm member 30 the air entering aperture 18 in the base plate to form the air bearing between the plate and the record or by providing an upstanding annular member (Fig. 7, not shown), on the base-plate surrounding the record so that the air has to flow upwardly on leaving the record periphery and thus provides the required lift. Alternatively a wedge shape member (Fig. 8, not shown) can be provided between base and record beneath the path scanned by the pick up. The pick up 50 is resiliently coupled by spring 52 to shoe member 49 which is supported on an air bearing between it and record 1. The shoe is connected to a resilient plate 47 which in turn is coupled by a resilient arm 43 to mechanism 42 which advances the assembly to move the pick up transversely of the record in synchronism with the record rotation.
