Abstract
1,042,318. Recording and playback apparatus. INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS MACHINES CORPORATION. Aug. 6, 1963 [Dec. 1, 1962], No. 45585/62. Heading G5R. Recording and playback apparatus comprises a rotatable mounting plate provided on one side with a plurality of spiral formations, a recording disc mounted so as to be rotatable about the axis of rotation of the mounting plate, and a transducing head assembly and driving means therefor including a follower engageable with one of the formations so as to move the head assembly over the disc in conformity with movement of the follower as the mounting plate rotates. In Fig. 1, a magnetizable record disc 1 is attached to the upper surface of a mounting plate 2 secured to a rotatable shaft 3. A transducing head 12 including one or more transducers is carried by one end of a U-shaped link arm 11, the other end of which carries a follower 10 which engages one of the spiral grooves 9a, 9b or 9c, formed in the lower surface of mounting plate 2. A pair of fixed guides 14 (only one of which is shown in Fig. 1), constrain the transducing head and follower to move in a radial direction. The follower is pivotally mounted on the link arm 11, and when it reaches the innermost end of the groove 9 it is lifted out of engagement by an inclined plate (not shown) so that the follower and head can be returned to an initial position, e.g. by a spring. In an alternative mounting arrangement, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), the head and the follower are mounted on arms attached to a spindle which pivots about a vertical axis. The spiral grooves in the mounting plate may be engageable by a single follower or by a particular one or any of a plurality of followers, each associated with a head assembly. As an aid to selecting a particular groove the shaft 3 may be provided with cams adapted to close electrical contacts at particular angles of rotation. One or more additional recording discs may be mounted on the shaft 3 and scanned on both sides by transducer heads coupled to the same mounting used for the head 12, Fig. 12 (not shown). In another arrangement, Fig. 13, the recording disc 1 is mounted separately from the mounting plate 2; the disc and the plate may rotate at the same or at different speeds. This arrangement is suitable for optical methods of reading, as a light source movable with the follower 10 may be mounted adjacent the side of the disc 1 opposite to that over which the head assembly moves.
