Abstract

1412675 Axial-flow compressors GENERAL MOTORS CORP 8 Feb 1973 [1 Nov 1972] 6199/73 Heading F1C A variable setting vane arrangement comprises an annular cascade of vanes extending radially from an annular support, a disc at one end of each vane and one side of the support, a shaft extending from the disc through a hole in the support and bushing means disposed between the disc and the support, the support having a circumferential recess formed in part by a continuous surface of revolution confronting the discs, and the bushing means including portions of generally rectangular outline disposed in the recess of thickness varying with the variation of clearance between each disc and the surface. Each compressor vane 4, Fig. 1, has a disc 7 bearing against a bushing 8 and a shaft 12 journalled in a cylindrical bushing 14. A nut 20 threaded on the shaft bears via a washer 18 on a bushing 15. The bushings 8, 14, 15 are of low-friction plastics material such as polyimide. The outer part 22 of the shaft 12 is milled to provide flats which co-operate with rectangular holes in an actuating arm 26 and a cup washer 24 for locking the nut 20, the arm and cup washer being held axially by a cap screw 30 and a washer 31. The arm 26 is connected to a unison ring 60 via a ball joint 62 and a rivet 63. The bushing 8 or 48, Fig. 5, bears against a circumferential recess common to all the vanes 4 in the row of vanes, the bushings each having a cylindrical surface facing the circumferential recess and a flat surface facing the disc 7. A single integral strip may define a number of bushings 48.
