Abstract
1412583 Viscous couplings HARRY FERGUSON Ltd 16 Oct 1972 [26 Oct 1971] 49738/71 Heading F2W The viscous coupling shown comprises annular plates 10 splined to a rotatable member 13 and annular plates 11 splined to the other rotatable member, 14, of the coupling, one end wall, 15 of the chamber including the plates 10,11 which chamber is filled with viscous fluid to at least 90% of its volume at ambient temperature, having an annular piston 26 in an annular chamber 27 therein which can move to accommodate contraction and expansion of the fluid without any need for a proportion of air in the chamber. The piston 26 may be spring biased and the plates 10, 11 may have slots or holes and may be replaced by interleaving cylinders. The coupling may be incorporated in a limitedslip differential or between the inputs to separate final drives in a motor vehicle. The individual plates 10 shown are spaced by wires 24, and the plates 11 are spaced by wires 25.
