Abstract
1412487 Granulating fertilizer BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 16 Feb 1973 [19 Feb 1972] 7642/73 Heading B5A [Also in Division C1] In a process for making substantially anhydrous granular fertilizer wherein moisturecontaining melts are sprayed on to moving granule cores in a granulating zone, e.g. a drum, whilst a gas inert to the melt and cores is passed through the zone, (a) the granule cores introduced into the zone have a temperature 5-30 C. below that of the granulating temperature, (b) the unsaturated water vapour pressure in the zone is 0À05-0À15 atmosphere, (c) the gas stream is adjusted to be 50-90% saturated with water vapour on leaving the zone, (d) the temperature of the melt introduced into the zone is 5-25 C. above the granulating temperature provided that the temperature of the melt is equal to or higher than the crystallization temperature of the melt and (e) the granules discharged from the zone are sifted with the tails and fines being recycled to the granulating zone. The melt may contain suspended solids, e.g. comminuted tails and fines which may be heated via steam heat exchangers. Fertilizers of nitro-chalk (lime and ammonia) and ammonium nitrate may be formed having a particle size of 1-3 mm. and a water content of 0À3-0À6% W/W. The gas may be air. Examples of granulating temperature, melt moisture content and inert gas temperatures are given.
