Abstract

1391819 Granulating HOECHSTAG 21 Dec 1972 [27 Dec 1971] 59214/72 Heading B5A [Also in Division C1] Granulated material, e.g. fertilizer, having a low water content is produced by prilling a portion of molten material in a spraying tower, producing a granulating bed from the grains so formed, e.g. a fluidized bed or one produced by a rotary tube, granulating drum or granulating plate, and spraying another portion of molten material on to this granulating bed. The range of granule size may be varied by altering the ratio of melt prilled to melt sprayed into the granulating bed. The fertilizers may be calcium amonium nitrate, N-P-K mixtures, N-MgO mixtures and nitrogen fertilizers containing sulphate. In an example, 44 tons of mash consisting of 30 tons of ammonium nitrate and 14 tons of calcium carbonate are prepared; 27 tons are sprayed at 150-160‹ C. in a spraying tower and the hot grain is passed into a rotary tube and sprayed with the remainder of the mash. An arrangement of apparatus includes a mixer feeding to the spraying tower with a separate feed to the rotary tube which feeds to a cooling device, a screening device and finally a powdering device and silo. Re-cycling lines are provided so that oversize grains from the screen are passed via a crusher either back to the screen or to the rotary tube; whilst undersize grains are passed either via melting equipment into the mixer, or directly to the rotary tube.
