Abstract

1412268 Electroluminescence DEFENCE SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 31 Aug 1973 [28 Nov 1972] 54853/72 Heading C4S A device comprises e.1. material having a high resistivity region produced by applying a forming voltage across the material and means for applying unidirectional pulses with a height greater than the maximum forming voltage and a pulse length such that the brightness B # #B M Î B DC where B M and B Dc are maximum brightness and brightness with 5 millisecond pulses respectively. The use of such pulses lengthens active live and increases contrast between lit and unlit areas. The e.l. material comprises ZnS : Mn particles coated with Cu embedded in a binder or a thin phosphor film vapour deposited on a glass substrate. To produce the region of high resistivity near the anode a potential of 25 V is applied for 2-3 minutes when the phosphor becomes weakly emitting. A steadily increasing voltage is then applied at constant power. Alternatively the forming voltage may be pulsed. A continuous layer or elements of the e.l. material are placed between crossed conductor arrays to form a display panel which is operated in the line scan mode. Pulses are applied using circuits each comprising a pair of transistors and a diode or a transistor and capacitor.
