Abstract
1412066 Silica gels SHIKOKU KAKEN KOGYO KK 15 Feb 1973 [25 Feb 1972] 7543/73 Headings C1A and C1H [Also in Division C4] An aggregate for use in inorganic coating compositions consists of a granular and fired product of silica gel, each granule of silica gel having a continuous surface layer and being a semi-closed cellular body, which is substantially non-absorbent to water vapour but absorbs liquid water to an extent 10-400 wt. per cent. The aggregate may be produced by gelling silica solution at a pH not higher than 7, drying the gel and firing the dried gel at 1000-1600‹ C. for foaming with or without pre-firing at 500- 900‹ C. In Example 1 water glass having a Na 2 O/SiO 2 ratio of 1 : 3À1 was diluted to a SiO 2 concentration of 8À5 wt. per cent and was poured into 15% H 2 SO 4 to produce a SiO 2 solution of pH 3 which was heated to 60‹ C. to obtain a silicon hydrogel. The hydrogel was washed and dried at 250‹ C. A portion was prefired at 700‹ C. for 30 minutes and then fired in a rotary kiln at 1400‹ C. to obtain a foamed product having a bulk density of 0À21 g/cm.<SP>3</SP> The silica aggregate is used in aqueous coating compositions which contain as binder Portland or Kean's cement, lime, gypsum or dolomite plaster. Optional components include gum arabic, casein, dextrin, starch, cellulose derivatives, polyvinyl alcohol, CaCl 2 , asbestos, rock wool, cotton and nylon.
