Abstract

1412038 Antilock braking systems TELDIX GmbH 9 March 1973 [11 March 1972] 11649/73 Heading F2F An antilock control system comprises a modulator 5 including a valve 6 connected between a master cylinder 2 and a wheel brake cylinder 3 and operated by a piston 10 movable between positions respectively allowing opening of valve 6 and closing valve 6 with subsequent increase of the volume of fluid located between the valve and the wheel cylinder, the piston being operated by an electromagnetic device including coil 13 to close the valve and by an electromagnetic device including coil 11 to open the valve, the piston being held in intermediate positions by a bar magnet 15 and soft iron plate 16. In operation, detection of wheel slip by a control unit 12 causes energization of coil 13 whereby the holding force of magnet 15 is overcome and piston 10 moves rightwardly to close the valve. When an acceleration signal occurs, or after a time lapse, unit 12 causes de-energization of coil 13 and magnet 15 becomes effective again to the piston 10 being held in the valve closed position so that the pressure is kept constant. At the end of the reacceleration phase coil 11 is energized and acts on a soft iron core 18 on the end of piston-rod 17 to move piston 10 leftwardly and open the valve. At the same time coil 11 is energized to neutralize the effect of the magnet 15. Coils 11, 13 are de-energized after piston 10 has returned to its initial position being retained in this position by magnet 15 and plate 16. In an alternative construction plate 16 and the poles of magnet 13, 15 are provided with teeth of the same pitch so that the piston may be held in a series of intermediate positions.
