1411874 Process for production of aniline- (4-azo-4-)-naphthylamine-1 BADISCHE ANILIN- & SODA-FABRIK AG 21 Feb 1973 [22 Feb 1972] 8478/73 Heading C4P An improved process is described for the production of aniline-(4-azo-4-)-naphthylamine-1 (Cellitazol STN) The process in which p-nitroaniline is diazotized, coupled with 1-naphthylamine, the intermediate nitro compound reduced with sodium sulphide and the dye separated from the molten liquor is modified by the addition of sodium sulphite to the reaction mixture to destroy excess sulphide. The reduction process may be carried out in caustic-alkaline solution at a pH of more than 9. The coupling reaction may be modified by adding the diazo compound to a suspension of 1-naphthylamine hydrochloride (prepared by dissolving the hydrochloride in an organic solvent which is miscible in all proportions with water, e.g. N-methylpyrrolidine, formamide, dimethyl formamide, glycol or acetic acid, and introducing the solution into dilute HCl). A combination of these features is particularly advantageous.
