The groups may be arranged in rows parallel to the axis of the roller, the groups in each row being preferably staggered in relation to the groups in adjacent rows. Another arrangement has the holes in circumferential rows, or in helices, or in random distribution. The pins in each group are preferably splayed in a direction generally parallel to the axis. Fig. 2 shows one suitable construction of a roller in cross-section, the groups of pins being mounted in holes in gills 16 carried in slots 17, a pressure bar 18 serving to splay the groups. Alternatively the groups may be mounted in individual holes directly in the roller. The pins may be secured as groups in holders which are inserted in the holes, or they may be inserted without holders. Fig. 6 (not shown) and Fig. 7 show a group of pins in a holder mounted directly in a hole in the roller.
