Abstract
1411545 Liquid-liquid extraction of Ni SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ NV 29 Dec 1972 [31 Dec 1971] 60950/71 Heading C1A An extracting agent for Ni comprises a 2- hydroxybenzophenone oxime of Formula I or a mixture of compound I with a 2-hydroxyphenyl aliphatic ketone oxime of Formula II and/or an aliphatic α-hydroxy ketone oxime of Formula III or a mixture of compound II with compound III. R<SP>1</SP>, R<SP>2</SP> and R<SP>6</SP> represent substituted or unsubstituted C 1-25 aliphatic hydrocarbyl or hydrocarbyloxy, E<SP>1</SP> and E<SP>2</SP> represent electronattracting substituents, R<SP>7</SP> is an aliphatic hydrocarbyl group, which may be substituted, and m, n, p, x and z may be 0-4, the total number of C atoms in R<SP>1</SP> m , R<SP>2</SP> n and E<SP>1</SP> p , and R<SP>6</SP> x , R<SP>7</SP> and E<SP>2</SP> y being 3-25. R<SP>3</SP> and R<SP>4</SP> are aliphatic hydrocarbyl groups, and R<SP>5</SP> is aliphatic hydrocarbyl or H. An aqueous ammoniacal solution containing Ni<SP>II</SP> and Co<SP>III</SP> is contacted with an organic phase comprising a water-immiscible organic solvent and the above extracting agent whereby Ni is extracted into the organic phase. The solution may be obtained by leaching ores with ammonia and oxidizing Co<SP>II</SP> to Co<SP>III</SP> with O 2 or H 2 O 2 . The loaded organic phase may be stripped (a) with aqueous HNO 3 or H 2 SO 4 and the Ni salts recovered or converted to Ni by electrolysis, or (b) with ammonia, and Ni(OH) 2 precipitated by evaporation of NH 3 ; alternatively Ni may be obtained by hydrogenation of the organic phase. The regenerated organic phase and the Co-containing aqueous phase may be recycled, Co being recovered from a bleed stream. Exemplified extractants are 5-sec-nonyl-2- hydroxybenzophenone oxime, alone and mixed with 5,8-diethyl-7-hydroxy-6-dodecanone oxime, in kerosine. Other compounds and solvents are listed.
