Abstract
1411249 Water-dispersible ternary sulphonium epoxy resins PPG INDUSTRIES Inc 15 Dec 1972 [20 Dec 1971] 57915/72 Heading C3B Novel ungelled water-dispersible epoxy resins having in the resin molecule an average of more than one 1,2-epoxy group and at least 0.05% by weight of chemically bound sulphur, at least 1% of which is in the form of ternary sulphonium base salt groups, are prepared by reacting appropriate epoxy resins with organic sulphides in the presence of an acid, the sulphide reacting with available epoxy groups. The acid is preferably lactic acid and the final product also preferably contains oxyalkylene groups and chemically bound boron. The boron may be introduced simultaneously with the sulphur and preferably in the form of quaternary ammonium borate groups, while the oxyalkylene groups may be introduced by direct oxyalkylation of the epoxy resin starting material or by reaction with oxyalkylated monoalcohols. In Examples (1) a reaction product of "Epon 836 " (a diglycidyl ether of bisphenol A) and bisphenol A is reacted with polypropylene glycol and subsequently with thiodiethanol and lactic acid; (2) Epon is reacted with thiodiethanol and lactic acid; (3) a reaction product of Epon and a monobutylether of a polyalkylene glycol is reacted with thiodiethanol and boric acid; (4)Eponis reacted with thiodiethanol and phosphoric acid and the product subsequently reacted with a monobutyl ether of a polyalkylene glycol and (5) Epon is reacted with diethyl sulphide, lactic acid and a monobutyl ether of a polyalkylene glycol. Uses.-The resulting products may be diluted with water and optionally further compounded with a surfactant and/or ground with titanium oxide and carbon black to provide electrodeposition baths for coating panels of aluminium, steel or zinc phosphated steel.
