Abstract
1411107 Purifying gases A P DESEVERSKY 17 Nov 1972 53116/72 Heading C1A [Also in Division B2] An electrostatic precipitator of the wet type comprises a plurality of tubular collector electrodes 10 to 14 concentrically arranged to define annular passages A, B, C, D provided with discharge electrodes 20, 21, 24 and 25. Liquid from distributers 10A to 14A flows down the walls of the collector electrodes. Contaminated gas enters the passages A, B, C, D through Venturi slots 29A to 29B which cause the gas to expand, thus forcing the liquid against the surface of the electrodes to produce a smooth liquid film thereon. Chemical reagents from a supply SV are injected into the contaminated gas stream to aid precipitation, being fed by way of a manifold 30 and standpipes 31. Thus, atomized hydrochloric acid may be injected into an ammonia-laden gas, whilst ammonia gas may be injected into a contaminated gas containing sulphur dioxide, hydrogen chloride, or hydrogen fluoride, the resulting reaction products in solution being collected for further treatment or use. A plurality of adjustably positionable manifolds may be provided to allow for the injection of a number of different reagents (Fig. 5, not shown). The contaminated gas may also be pretreated with activated carbon, with ozone generated by a corona discharge, or by passage over a catalyst, to remove odours.
