Abstract

1411087 Absorbent pad KANGA HOSPITAL PRODUCTS LTD 14 Dec 1972 [15 Dec 1971] 58233/71 Heading A5R An elongate absorbent pad (5), Fig 3, (not shown) for urinary incontinence has a fold forming a thrust surface against which a force may be applied to insert the pad (5) into an elongate pouch 2, Fig 2, located at the crotch of a pair of pants 1. The pants 1 are elasticated at the waist and legs. The pouch 2 extends from an opening 3 in the front to a closed end 4. The pad (5) comprises a filling 6, Fig 4, of synthetic or natural fibre such as flocked wood pulp wrapped in a double layer of creped paper 7 with a longitudinal seal 8. Discrete masses 9 of powdered cellulose ether, cellulose esters or acetyl starch are encapsulated between the layers of creped paper 7 in positions which correspond, when the pad is fitted to a wearer, the areas which receive most urine. An outer wrapper 10 of a non-woven fabric has a longitudinal seal 11 and is sealed at the ends (12, 13), to provide finger-grips. A median crimped seal (14) provides a fold line. A curved flexible plastics blade (15), Fig 5, (not shown) is used to thrust the pad (5) into the pouch 2 so that only the finger-grips (12, 13) protrude. In one embodi ment, the pants 1 are made from 100% polyester knitted fabric and have a pouch 2 made of nylon fabric coated with polyurethane to render it waterproof. The filling may be flocked wood pulp applied at the rate of 54 gm per sq metre. The inner wrapper may be 3 gm per sq metre of creped paper and the outer wrapper is advantageously 16 gm per sq metre of a regenerated cellulose non-woven fabric bonded with a latex. The cellulose ether is preferably methyl cellulose.
