Abstract

1411009 Recovering metals from scrap I M I REFINERY HOLDINGS Ltd 3 May 1974 [14 May 1973] 22786/73 Heading C7D Copper coated aluminium scrap is treated with an aqueous ammoniacal solution of an ammonium salt (e.g. carbonate or sulphate) to dissolve the copper and leave the aluminium. The leachant is preferably oxidized during or away from the leaching process (e.g. by blowing air, oxygen, ozone or H 2 O 2 into the solution). The scrap is preferably shredded prior to treatment which also removes the insulation and is preferably tumbled while in contact with the leachant. Copper is recovered from the leachant by a known method.
