Abstract

1410915 Fuses JOHNSON MATTHEY & CO Ltd 4 Oct 1972 [4 Oct 1971 30 March 1972] 46114/71 and 15013/72 Heading H2G ]Also in Division B3] A fuse element consists of e.g. silver in intimate contact with a quantity of e.g. silvertin eutectic alloy such that the slight overload " quick blow " characteristics can be accurately controlled. The fuse element is cut or cropped from a body which may comprise several embodiments. In a first embodiment, a block of silver of rectangular prism form, has a longitudinal hole bored therein, which is filled with the above alloy and rolled so that thin fuse element strips may be cut therefrom. In another embodiment (Fig. 1, not shown) fuse element strips are cut transversely from a body 10 which has longitudinal strips (14, 16) of the above alloy adhered thereto, on opposite surfaces, in another embodiment (Fig. 2, not shown) the strips (14, 16) may be embedded, as at (20, 22). In a further embodiment, Fig. 3, discrete buttons 24 of tin-silver alloy are cast by a mechanized continuous process on to surface 26 of silver block 10, so that each pair of buttons 24a, 24b is such that the buttons are directly opposite. The row of buttons is longitudinal so that fuse elements may be cut transversely from the body, each with a pair of buttons. In a further embodiment, the silver block may comprise two halves each with a channel filled with alloy which are then brought together, soldered, and rolled as above.
